This is the third monograph of a bird group written by the author (Pigeons & Doves and Crows being the other two).  Many of the species in this group have long been popular cage and avairy birds and the subject is touched on in this book.  The book begins with general aspects of nomenclature, distribution, plumages, behaviour and biology and a chapter on estrildids in captivity.  Individual species accounts then follow in the main body of the book.  Each species is covered (where there is information available) with a description, field characteristics, distribution (including a map) and habitat, feeding and general habits, nesting, voice, display and social behaviour and references.  The colour plates are delightfully illustrated by Martin Woodcock.
